Gardenia – the delicate scent that brings up the romantic side in every woman

Gardenia is a flowering shrub or a small tree with astoundingly beautiful white flowers and a strong and sweet exotic scent. Surprisingly, it is a plant that belongs to the coffee family. It grows in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australasia and Oceania and is an evergreen plant. You may find it interesting that gardenia is the national flower of… Pakistan!

With its heavenly scent gardenia essential oil is among the most precious essential oils you can find. An interesting fact about gardenia is that it is so delicate that its oil cannot be extracted through steam distillation (the most commonly used method for essential oil extraction). Instead, the gardenia flowers are covered with palm oil until their scent migrates to the palm oil. It is then separated from the palm oil by alcohol. This method is very time-consuming and requires a lot of work, which is the reason why a synthetic substitute of natural gardenia scent is used in perfumes.

Except for using synthetic ingredients, the gardenia perfume note is also achieved by mixing a few essential oils that are reminiscent of the natural gardenia flower scent. It is a very popular perfume note for women’s perfumes as its delicate scent brings up the romantic side in every woman.

Gardenia essential oil is known in traditional medicine for its calming effect. It also helps reduce swelling and stops bleeding. In Chinese herbal medicine gardenia is also used for treating infections, anxiety, and even insomnia. Its healing properties have been proven effective for healing depression, headache, and dizziness.

Gardenia is among the few perfume notes that are cosmically balanced (which means that they are perfectly balanced, having top notes, middle notes, and base notes in them at the same time). Even though it may be used alone, gardenia essential oil blends well with cinnamon, citrus notes, clove, jasmine, neroli, rose, tuberose, and ylang-ylang. Its rich and warm flowery scent makes it perfect for feminine and sensual women’s perfumes.
