Grapefruit – sweet and tangy, stimulating and refreshing

The citrus grapefruit note is very popular in the perfume world. The sweet and tangy aroma of grapefruit has inspired many perfumers for the creation of both female and male fragrances. Stimulating and refreshing, grapefruit blends exceptionally well with many other notes, such as bergamot, lavender, geranium, Palma Rosa, frankincense, neroli, rosemary, cypress, juniper, jasmine, rosewood, and ylang-ylang.

A relatively young species, grapefruit was first bred in Barbados in the 18th century. It is believed to be a natural mix of the fruits pomelo and orange. It is a relatively small tree that grows in clusters (looking like big yellowish-orange grapes). Its color may vary from almost white to yellow, orange, and ruby red. The main producer of grapefruit is the USA (with Florida taking a third of the production alone).

Grapefruit essential oil is extracted from the peel of the fruit through cold pressing. It is widely used in aromatherapy. Its scent is sharp and citrusy and it is famous for its stimulating and uplifting effect. It is a powerful weapon against colds and it is especially popular as a remedy for cellulite (as it helps the reduction of the fluid levels of the body). It is also used as an antidepressant and has great antiseptic properties. With its calming effect on the stomach, grapefruit is also used for treating different eating disorders.

In the perfumery world, you will find grapefruit both in male and in female perfumes. It is very powerful when used as a top note as it helps the opening of the composition with a powerful fresh start, gently giving way to the middle and base notes. As a note, grapefruit can vary from sharp and tart, to sugary and delicate (depending on the sort used).
